Dental business planning consultant, Andy McDougall from Spot On Business Planning, says that most people’s reason for not making progress is their mindset. Are you the owner or the leader?Where will you set your personal compass? What’s stopping you?How about a personal revolution? To change your mindset you might need some help. But be careful who you take advice from. If I read a book on marketing or finance, for example, I could probably blag my way by using some of the buzz words. But that’s not knowledge. That’s spin.Take advice from the right people, someone who has been there and done it, not someone who has visited Waterstones. Talking the talk and walking the walk are very different approaches. When I meet a new dental business client I cringe when I hear they have been told to follow a strategy, yet when asked what process was followed to determine that strategy there is a vacant look in their eyes. It’s even worse when I ask them how they intend to implement it, even if their strategy was well thought out.Anyone who has run a corporate would find that unthinkable. A strategy built on sand isn’t a strategy. Hope is not a strategy. Then there are those who have a strategy of the week. If you keep changing your strategy – you don’t have one, it’s that simple. The constant need to have a new strategy means you are not a strategist. We see it all too often in Dragons’ Den when they ask for the business plan. That’s when the alarm bell rings – you can often see the panic in the contestants’ eyes.Having worked for a venture capitalist, try getting the money without a business plan. Try getting the money without knowing the key metrics. Try explaining tactics without strategy.
Don’t buy into the ‘Me 2’ marketing myth
The biggest single issue we see is that owners are growing their dental business’ turnover, only to see that the materials and lab suppliers are better off, the associates are better off, the marketing company is better off and the only loser is the owner. Do you think you will change that by doing more marketing? So, are you in the 90%? Maybe it’s time for a change. Don’t go where the 90% go, don’t do what the 90% do. Be in the 10%. Contact Andy McDougall at Spot On Business Planning for a different approach to financial business planning, leadership and decision making for dentists.
